Outrage is continuing to grow over Donald Trump’s cruel and inhumane immigration policy. Former First Lady Laura Bush penned an impassioned op-ed in the Washington Post imploring the Administration to end the cruelty of literally ripping children from their parents’ arms at the border, and narrowing the definition of what it means to be a legal asylum seeker. Hell, even his own wife, Melania, weighed in, saying we should govern “with heart.” Clearly, she is troubled by her heartless husband’s actions as well.
However, now, someone much more influential is weighing in, and it could have dire implications for the United States’s position in the United Nations. U.N. Human Rights Chief Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, while giving a speech in Geneva, Switzerland to the full Human Rights Council, said of what Trump and his thugs are doing:
In the United States, I am deeply concerned by recently adopted policies which punish children for their parents’ actions. The thought that any state would seek to deter parents by inflicting such abuse on children is unconscionable.”
al-Hussein, who is finishing up his term, went on to say that this cruel separation policy is nothing more than “government-sanctioned child abuse” and said it would cause “irreparable harm” to the children affected.
Now, of course, the Trump Administration gives not a damn about human rights abuses; in fact, abusing people they deem as less than worthy of equal treatment is part of the Republican Party’s DNA. It is simply amped up a million fold under Trump.
We tried to warn the deplorables that if they elected a man who clearly has no decency, no sense of compassion, empathy or humanity, that this is the sort of thing that would happen. And now that it has come to pass, we see the results: children paying for the insanely racist ways of the GOP in general and of Donald Trump and Mike Pence in particular.
Then again, isn’t that what they wanted? A bunch of children brutalized, all for a few tax cuts and a right-wing asshole on the Supreme Court. Shame on you, Republicans. That is, if you have any capacity to feel shame left.
