Donald Trump thought he was popular enough that he could punish Fox News for keeping Megyn Kelly as a debate moderator. We all know Trump is afraid of women, so the fact he did this isn’t that surprising. What was a delightful surprise, however, was seeing how badly this backfired on him.
The audience for the Republican debate on Fox News was 12.5 million. This is down from 20+ for the first debate of the cycle, but that is to be expected since you can really only hear the word “abortion” shouted so many times before it gets boring. However, Trump’s insurgent TV extravaganza only managed to attract a combined 2.7 million viewers across CNN and MSNBC (further data is not available). That has to be pretty embarrassing for the walking ego that is Trump.
Of course, Trump says that his debacle was a YOOOGE success and claim that it proves America really loves him.
“Maybe Fox was gonna have a 20 or 25 million person debate, but without Mr. Trump’s participation, I think they might have a one to two million person debate,” Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said in an effort to save face. Trump himself claims that Fox “would have had 12 million more & would have broken the all time record” had he attended.
That isn’t anything new, because when did Republicans care about reality? What he did, though, is shoot himself in the foot by proving that he isn’t a “necessary commodity” for ratings. Perhaps now every news service will realize that they don’t have to cover him 24/7 in order to keep people watching.
This, coupled with the fact that his “veterans” effort was more about funneling money to his own organization than sending it directly to charities that help our troops, might finally prove to be the tipping point for many who are slowly growing tired of this election’s second place loser for the Republican version of American Idol.
The ultimate f-you to Trump would be to have Megyn Kelly involved in another candidate event, whether it’s a debate or just a town-hall type gathering. Could you imagine him having to admit defeat and actually show up while she’s there? I’d buy that on pay-per-view. The next round of polls will be interesting, to say the least, seeing how quickly the audience forgot he was even missing.
