During the 2016 presidential campaign, the nation and world watched in horror as Donald Trump spoke gleefully of a “deportation force,” which he would use to kick every undocumented immigrant he could find out of the nation. We watched as he kicked off his presidential run with claims that all Mexican immigrants are rapists and criminals and drug dealers. We all are living through the reality of that presidency now, as we watch the cruelty of the man insisting that separating parents from children at the border — many of them infants, toddlers, and small children — is just following the law.
Now Trump is escalating his war on immigrants to a sacred American institution: The military.
According to right-wing America, anyone who puts their life on the line for this country is worthy of the highest honor. Apparently, this sentiment does not extend to the many immigrants who happen to be undocumented who have done just that. According to the Associated Press, the United States Army, under guidance from the Trump Administration, is moving to discharge many troops who entered the military under a program that guaranteed them the coveted path to full and legal United States citizenship.

Brazilian immigrant Lucas Calixto is living proof that immigrants are just as, if not more than, patriotic as native-born Americans. Calixto is a reservist who has filed a lawsuit over the matter. He says of his situation:
It was my dream to serve in the military. Since this country has been so good to me, I thought it was the least I could do to give back to my adopted country and serve in the United States military.”
This is horrific. These people belong here. They are a part of the fabric of this great nation, and they are doing what so many Americans spend their lives avoiding: Serving this country and protecting our freedoms. Not only that, but this is America breaking a promise — these soldiers were guaranteed that they would be able to become Americans after risking their lives for this country.
Watch the AP brief on this here:
Just a reminder — Donald Trump is a five-time draft dodger, and now he is attacking the people who did what he will not do, all because of who they are.
This is what white nationalism as public policy looks like, folks. Take heed. The last time a nation ignored a fascist’s grip on power, we got Nazi Germany. Don’t let history repeat itself.
