Donald Trump has been trying to do damage control thanks to his inhumane immigration fiasco ever since he received backlash for separating thousands of migrant children and babies from their parents a few weeks ago. The president received so much criticism that he reluctantly changed his demands for separating families, instead allowing them to be detained together.
However, Trump’s headaches are far from being over. Yesterday, the U.S. State Department issued a critical report which stated that removing children from their parents raises massive concerns about human trafficking, and makes those children easy targets. The annual Trafficking in Persons report analyzed 187 countries and stated in its data that children should only be separated from parents as a “temporary, last resort.”
Trump came under fire again after the report was released, as advocacy director for Human Rights Watch John Sifton called the report “an indictment of the Trump administration’s own policies with respect to asylum seekers and others seeking entry into the United States.”
In conjunction with the unveiling of the report, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, along with daughter and Trump advisor Ivanka Trump, honored the “heroes” who were fighting against human trafficking.
Pompeo said at a department event:
The world should know that we will not stop until human trafficking is a thing of the past.”
As if Donald Trump couldn’t face any more backlash for his disgusting policies, the fact that his daughter isn’t standing by him is sure to hurt. Ivanka should hardly be celebrated for this, as she has been silent and complicit in throughout many of Donald Trump’s blunders and inhumane actions and policies. However, she remains one of the only people he will actually listen to, so perhaps her opposition on this matter will have a somewhat positive impact.
