Donald Trump has begun the week by practically ruining our relationship with our European allies, when the NATO Summit is literally just days away.
The Tweeter in Chief kicked off his Monday by demanding that our European allies should pay more in the North American Treaty Organization. Trump is still sticking to his tired talking point that the United States is supporting the group more than others, while not getting anything back in return. Trump ranted on Twitter:
The United States is spending far more on NATO than any other Country. This is not fair, nor is it acceptable. While these countries have been increasing their contributions since I took office, they must do much more. Germany is at 1%, the U.S. is at 4%, and NATO benefits Europe far more than it does the U.S. By some accounts, the U.S. is paying for 90% of NATO, with many countries nowhere close to their 2% commitment. On top of this the European Union has a Trade Surplus of $151 Million with the U.S., with big Trade Barriers on U.S. goods. NO!”
The president’s decision to tweet these remarks before the Brussels NATO summit happening later this week is pretty much ensuring that the summit is going to start on the wrong foot. Trump’s anti-NATO remarks are already highly unpopular, so this is sure to create unnecessary tension even before things kick off.
This would hardly be the first time that Trump has ruined a summit and America’s standing with our allies. During the G-7 summit, Trump repeatedly attacked other world leaders and disrespected them on the world stage. We can practically predict that the NATO summit is going to be more of the same unhinged behavior from the childish, unpresidential idiot in the White House. How can we survive two more years of this?!
