One of the most brutal examples of backlash that came out of Donald Trump’s (now-reversed) inhumane border separation policy was the cover that TIME Magazine published. While many media networks continued to blast the president with their coverage, TIME made the added effort to visually humiliate the president by showing him standing indifferently over a young Honduran girl who is crying.
This image was a perfect reminder of the heartlessness that Trump possesses.
However, there was a mistake in reporting, as the Honduran toddler who had been photographed by John Moore had not actually been separated from her mother. The publication corrected itself as soon as possible:
The original version of this story misstated what happened to the girl in the photo after she taken from the scene. The girl was not carried away screaming by U.S. Border Patrol agents; her mother picked her up and the two were taken away together.”
However, Trump was livid over the mistake and lost it. The president got his son, Donald Trump Jr., to tweet for him:
Shocked that the media and especially @time mag could be so full of crap… 😂 ok who am I kidding??? No one is shocked any more. There is no low they won’t go to for their narrative.”
Trump also got White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to take his side:
However, TIME continues to stand by its depiction of Trump on the cover, and has issued a strong statement to push back:
The magazine said:
The June 12 photograph of the 2-year-old Honduran girl became the most visible symbol of the ongoing immigration debate in America for a reason. Under the policy enforced by the administration, prior to its reversal this week, those who crossed the border illegally were criminally prosecuted, which in turn resulted in the separation of children and parents. Our cover and our reporting capture the stakes of this moment.”
We could not have said it better.
