Donald Trump has been busy destroying our alliances at the NATO summit this week, but he paused for a second to brag about how swimmingly his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un was going on Twitter.
This afternoon, Trump was bragging about how well he gets along with brutal dictators by tweeting out a letter that he had received from Kim, with the original alongside the translated version. The letter was sent on July 5th, marking several weeks since the two men met in Singapore to discuss denuclearization and left the meeting with no concrete plans in place.
In the letter, Kim refers to Trump as “your excellency” several times and talks about the “improvement of relations” between the two nations. But what is missing in this letter is any mention of the denuclearization that he and Trump are supposed to be working on. There is also no mention of fixing the country’s human rights issues. Here’s Trump’s tweet:
A very nice note from Chairman Kim of North Korea. Great progress being made! pic.twitter.com/6NI6AqL0xt

While Trump continues to brag and boast about all the “progress” he has made with North Korea, he’s been heavily criticized for having been taken advantage of by Kim, who seems to have figured out that all he needs to do in order to control Trump is flatter and compliment him. Trump’s also facing backlash for not having any real agreement for denuclearization, as newer reports actually state that North Korea may be continuing to build their nuclear infrastructure. More recently, North Korea blasted more recent talks with the United States as “regrettable” after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to Pyongyang to discuss how things would progress.
We have yet to learn the full story, but this looks like another move to manipulate Trump and butter him up. And clearly, Trump is falling for it.
