As the White House Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders is an employee of the federal government. Therefore, there are certain ethical standards to which she is legally held. However, as we all know by now, the Trump Administration is — ahem — ethically challenged, to be generous. To that end, it should come as no surprise that Sanders is now potentially in violation of ethics rules over an incident at Virginia’s Red Hen restaurant, which ejected her and others for working in the bigoted Trump Administration.
The restaurant’s owner, Stephanie Wilkinson, ejected Sanders’ party. Axios describes the situation thusly:
After that, Sarah Huckabee Sanders took to Twitter to chastise the restaurant owner for refusing to serve her family. However, this is the height of hypocrisy, seeing as Sarah Huckabee Sanders is the daughter of none other than Mike Huckabee, who held a huge rally defending Kim Davis, the County Clerk who was jailed after the Obergefell v. Hodges marriage equality decision. Davis was held in contempt of court for not doing her government, taxpayer-funded job because she objected on moral grounds. Well, these people at Red Hen objected to serving a member of the Trump Administration on moral grounds.
What’s the difference here, hypocrites? You can’t have it both ways.
Well, it turns out that what Sanders did on Twitter may not just be hypocritical — it also might be an ethics violation. Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) was on a CNN panel with State of the Union host Jake Tapper on Sunday morning, and the issue came up. First, right-wing commentator David Urban expressed his distress at the situation:
I think it is sad. We are completely at opposite sides of many, many issues, most issues and we get along fine. You can have civil discourse in America and disagree. America should be a marketplace of ideas. You shouldn’t be asked to leave a restaurant. If you do, if the people want to frequent her restaurant because of her views, that’s great.”
No, Stephanie Wilkinson was doing just what the right-wing wants everyone to be able to do: to refuse service on the basis of conscience. That shit cuts both ways if that is how it is going to be. Doesn’t feel so good when your side is on the receiving end, does it? Well, then Rep. Lee weighed in, first talking about the following racist tweet from Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ father, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee:

Rep. Lee said:
It was disgusting when you look at this mentality and how he tweeted that picture. But also with regard to Sarah, she used her government account for taking on this private restaurant, a private business. I personally think she should be referred to the Office of Government Ethics.”
So, to that end, Sarah Huckabee Sanders has more than hypocrisy and bigotry to worry about. Perhaps she even has legal issues with regards to her petty attacks on private entities to worry about.
In short — if you espouse bigotry, expect to be treated like a bigot. End of story.
