After the FBI raided the offices, hotel, and home of Donald Trump’s longtime personal attorney Michael Cohen, the former reality show star lashed out and called it a ‘witch hunt’ then brought up former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in order to feign that he’s being victimized. But, privately, Trump has become even more unglued. A Republican close to the White House told Vanity Fair that “He’s sitting there bitching and moaning. He’s brooding and doesn’t have a plan.”
“I could see him having a total meltdown and saying, ‘Fuck it, I’m firing all of them,’” a Trump friend told Vanity Fair. “This is very dry tinder. If someone strikes a match to it, you could see it catching fire,” a former official said.
The former reality show star has become more isolated, with staffers and aides exiting through the revolving White House door at an unprecedented rate.
“Trump’s just doing his own thing now,” the Trump friend said.
Trump told John Bolton and recently appointed economic adviser Larry Kudlow that they should report directly to him, in an apparent disregard of his Chief of Staff, John Kelly.
Bolton and Kelly are not seeing eye-to-eye. For example, he told Kelly he wanted to replace N.S.C. spokesman Michael Anton, but Kelly resisted the move. Then, according to VF, Bolton overruled him. “Bolton said to Kelly, ‘The president told me to get rid of anyone he thinks is a leaker. If you’re going to stop this then you’ll own every leak coming out of the N.S.C.'”
Just this morning, Donald Trump’s top homeland security adviser, Tom Bossert, resigned, but it actually appears that he was essentially fired because Bolton wanted him gone.
Trump is a loose cannon. It appears he’s permanently gone off script and that’s dangerous. Trump’s impulses could lead to Mueller being removed. But, even though White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said today that Trump “certainly believes he has the power“ to fire Robert Mueller, he does not. That would be up to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein who personally gave the green light for the FBI to conduct the raids. So, Trump would have to fire Rosenstein, then find someone willing to put their career on the line for a man who is not loyal to those who are loyal to him. And if Trump accomplished that, we would have a Constitutional crisis on our hands.
