Ivanka Trump is just like her father, despite the fact that she tries far harder to keep her reputation intact by avoiding most of the controversy and drama that her father seems to encourage and welcome.
But no matter how reserved and calculated Ivanka is when handling every crisis her father makes, she’s a Trump before anything else — and she really proved that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree recently.
Earlier today, the Christian Broadcasting Network reported that Ivanka, who serves as an advisor to her father, was being praised by an evangelical leader who is a member of President Donald Trump’s Religious Advisory Council. What did Ivanka do to deserve this recognition? She made a $50,000 personal donation to Pastor Jack Graham of the Prestonwood Baptist Church in honor of ‘helping’ migrant families — something daddy will surely hate!
Here’s the thing, though: Graham is an extremely problematic character here. He has a long history of bigotry and anti-LGBT activism, which includes protesting against marriage equality and trying to repeal a non-discrimination ordinance in Texas over the last few years. This is a man who once said:
This is an old fight dating back to the Garden of Eden when Satan seduced the first family with lies and deception. The same lies are in play today. The biblical design of marriage is clear: a man and a woman living and loving together in a monogamous relationship in the image of God.”
“Gay marriage violates God’s standard and is outside God’s plan for men and women. The Supreme Court of the United States has now reached their goal of legalizing gay marriage in every state in the country. We have set a course for disaster in our beloved nation and there seems to be no turning back.”
And Ivanka just handed this man $50,000. After receiving the donation, the megachurch pastor said:
I’ve had the opportunity to meet with Ivanka Trump a number of times over the last year, and I’ve been struck by her kindness and concern for those in need, so, it wasn’t that surprising to know she would want to help these families. Hopefully, Ivanka’s generosity will inspire many other Americans to get off the sidelines and actually provide tangible help to those in need.”
“The beauty of America and the people in our church is that we don’t have to wait for our politicians to sort out their disagreements in order to do what is right.”
To pretend that both Ivanka or Graham actually give a crap about migrant families is foolish. They have both stood by Trump as he targeted minorities with his agenda. Most notably, Graham defended Trump after the president was caught admitting to sexually assaulting women on the “Access Hollywood” tape, and had Trump’s back after the president called Nazis “fine people” after the deadly rally in Charlottesville.
Trump isn’t going to like Ivanka’s donation to help migrants, but at least he can rest assured that another minority group will be hurt in the process. And with racists like Graham, the donation is probably not going to “help” these families much at all.
