The NATO summit in Brussels hasn’t even begun and already Donald Trump has managed to piss everyone off.
Trump left for his foreign trip today, and he could barely board Air Force One without trashing his allies and bragging about how meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin was going to be more enjoyable than speaking with America’s allies. Within the last few days, Trump has been sending our allies similar messages, making relations tense before the summit has even begun.
In response to his disgusting behavior, European Union president Donald Tusk has sent the President of the United States a blunt message and put him back in his place. Tusk, who will also be in Brussels for the NATO summit this week, warned Trump to stop trying to pick fights with allies. Tusk told Trump that “it is always worth knowing who is your strategic friend and who is your strategic problem.” He also said this:
Dear America, appreciate your allies. After all, you don’t have that many.”
That’s a powerful statement, and shows Americans just how bad this country has gotten under Trump’s leadership. Tusk also blasted Trump for saying that European allies aren’t paying enough for defense and are leaning too heavily on America for help.

It’ll be interesting (or terrifying) to see how the NATO summit turns out. Already, Trump is signaling that he’s going to completely blow it and push our allies farther away while drawing Putin even closer. We can only hope that someone on Trump’s team can keep the president on a tight leash.
