Donald Trump is perhaps the most corrupt “president” to ever occupy the Oval Office. He is trying to get his Attorney General to quit because said AG refused to un-recuse himself from the Russia investigation that has plagued Trump’s White House since he took office. He admitted on the air that he fired former FBI Director James Comey over that same investigation. He and his family are using the powers of the presidency to wheel and deal with foreign governments – China is the latest with that whole ZTE situation – and, there’s another piece to all of this. Trump is now blocking an investigation from the Government Accountability Office.
According to The Hill, Congressional Democrats have sent a letter to House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) to see why the hell the Trump White House is flat out refusing to respond to independent investigators whose sole job is to investigate and stop government corruption. The letter, which was spearheaded by Oversight Ranking Member Elijah Cummings (D-MD), says in part:
We are writing to request that you hold an immediate hearing on the dramatic decision by the White House to obstruct investigations by our independent investigators at the Government Accountability Office. We ask that the Committee obtain testimony from the White House Counsel and General Counsel of GAO.”
Thomas Armstrong, the Counsel for the GAO, also wrote to Trump’s White House Counsel, Don McGahn, saying:
I understand that attorneys from your office and the National Security Council (NSC) will not respond to the inquiries or otherwise engage with GAO staff during the course of our reviews. This approach represents a clear departure from past practice.”
So, in other words, the White House has decided that they can continue to be as corrupt as they like, the Constitution and the law be damned, and they will simply ignore anyone that tries to reign in said corruption.
Congress, it is time to do your jobs. This country is turning into a tinpot dictatorship before our very eyes. It is your job as a co-equal branch of government to stop that from happening.
