Back when Donald Trump tried to get black NFL players fired from their jobs for exercising their right to protest their brutal treatment by police across America, people were quick to start making guesses at whether or not it was legal for him to do something like that. After all, Trump’s voice as the president carries more weight than, say, legions of racist football fans who just want black players to shut up and catch the ball.
Unfortunately, the hopes of millions who wanted to see Trump guilty of an obvious crime like that were dashed when the law prohibiting an official of the government from doing things like that was laid out: It would have to be proven that he did it “solely on the basis of partisan political affiliation.”
It was nothing like that — Trump’s just a racist, and he knew the move would play well with his 100 percent racist base.
But there might be a glimmer of hope for Americans who want to see somebody in this administration go down for improperly influencing a private enterprise. After sixteen and a half months of watching the Trump administration blissfully, gleefully promote products, recommend punishments, threaten to dismantle press protections, and otherwise break down our democracy by skirting the law ever so slightly, it looks like Sarah Huckabee Sanders may have just slipped up enough to catch her in it.
In an interview with The Wrap, a television and Hollywood news coverage site, Sanders issued the following statement:
The language used by Samantha Bee last night is vile and vicious. The collective silence by the left and its media allies is appalling. Her disgusting comments and show are not fit for broadcast, and executives at Time Warner and TBS must demonstrate that such explicit profanity about female members of this administration will not be condoned on its network.”
That looks a lot like what Trump did, with one glaring difference: Sanders specified who Samantha Bee shouldn’t be using that language about, and that was female members “of this administration.”
That sure does look like it’s “solely on the basis of partisan political affiliation,” doesn’t it?
So what should it be for Sarah Huckabee Sanders? Fines? Prison?
Personally, I’m feeling both, and maybe at some point, she could be forced to listen to her other favorite comedian, Michelle Wolf, on an endless loop telling her “smoky eye” joke.
