Thanks to Donald Trump’s horrific leadership, it’s really hard to imagine a world where Americans are any more disappointed in the Republican Party and the spineless nature of conservatives. Unfortunately, there is always a way to lower the bar whenever Trump is concerned.
After this country has suffered several school shootings in such a short amount of time, Congress has finally made a statement about gun control after repeatedly saying that it wasn’t “the right time” to talk about keeping children safe. And now that they’ve finally spoken, they’re going to wish they’d kept their mouths shut.
Earlier today, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) gave a truly repulsive statement about gun control in America — he said he doesn’t think Congress has much power to prevent school shootings from happening. What the hell?!
According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, McConnell spoke to community leaders in Kentucky, stating that the federal government was basically powerless to reform America’s gun laws. He said:
You would think, given how much it takes to get on an American plane or given how much it takes to get into courthouses, that this might be something that we could achieve, but I don’t think we could do that from Washington. I think it’s basically a local decision.”
It’s a darn shame that’s where we are but this epidemic is something that’s got all of our attention. And I know it’s got the attention of every school superintendent in the country.”
This is an absolutely disgusting statement, and people will remember this in November. Children are dying all over the country due to our lack of gun control — an issue that plagues the United States specifically. There is no other country that struggles with gun violence the way that we do because the GOP refuses to do anything about it.
There is no going back after this for Republicans. With their lazy, dismissive leadership and lack of action on critical issues like gun violence, they have basically sealed their fate in the midterms. We cannot wait to vote them out and start fixing this country.
