For weeks now, the nation has been bracing for Donald Trump’s Supreme Court pick to replace outgoing Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. Now, we have our answer, and it is as frightening as we could have imagined. Brett Kavanaugh will almost certainly do all he can to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that guaranteed a woman’s right to abortion. If it is decided that overturning Roe is too radical in a nation that, in 2018, supports abortion rights in all or most cases, that judge will simply hand down 5-4 decisions that steadily restrict abortion and contraception access in red states across the nation. The same will go for decisions regarding sex education and other rights important to women.
However, Roe is not the only thing that hangs in the balance. This is a nominee handpicked by the ulta-conservative Federalist Society, led by a man named Leonard Leo, a think tank that is notoriously against voting rights protections, climate science, protections for racial and religious minorities, and LGBTQ people. In short, a confirmation of this person to the Supreme Court means that we will turn back civil rights a generation or more – and that will last for another generation.
Donald Trump is looking to use the courts to install white nationalism, misogyny, homophobia, hostility to religious minorities, and xenophobia as law for more than a generation. If there is a time for Democrats to use the same dirty tricks that the Republicans used to steal President Barack Obama’s last Supreme Court seat, it is now. The future of the republic depends upon it.
That is literal, by the way, as it is being reported that Kavanaugh is a man who doesn’t think a sitting president can be indicted, and seems to believe there is no reason said president should not pick the jurists who might rule on any pending criminal investigations in which he is involved.

Democrats, marshal your entire Senate conference on this one, and force them to hold the line. Then, have your constituents put the heat on blue state Republicans – particularly pro-choice GOPers like Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and make sure this nomination fails.
