Donald Trump has just left an entire CNN panel along with millions of viewers stunned with a statement that trashes America’s allies and glorifies Russia (although at this point, what can we expect from Trump?).
Trump is heading to Brussels for the NATO summit today, and let’s just say that he didn’t make any effort to get things started on the right foot. In a statement that once again makes collusion look incredibly plausible, Trump said that it would be “easier” for him to have a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin than it would be to meet with European allies such as the United Kingdom.
After Trump pissed off several of America’s allies at the G-7 summit not too long ago, any reasonable person would expect the president to tread lightly and try to keep what was left of those relationships intact. But not Trump. Right before boarding Air Force One, Trump gave a breakdown of his schedule during his foreign trip and essentially admitted that the part he was most excited about was seeing Putin. Trump said:
I have NATO, I have the UK, which is somewhat in turmoil, and I have Putin. Frankly, Putin may be the easiest of them all – who would think?”
That is an insane statement to make about the leader of a country that meddled in an election. CNN’s John Avlon was taken aback by Trump’s statement, too, and noted how insane it was to hear that coming from the President of the United States. Avlon said:
Vladimir Putin, to say that he’s a competitor, to say it’s too early to say what his intentions are, we have plenty of documentation. This is the president continuing to keep Putin close. And to say that Putin is a friendlier, easier meeting than with our oldest allies in the world is simply jaw-dropping.”
Avlon also pointed out what many of us are wondering. Drawing attention to Trump’s weird obsession with Trump, Avlon said:
He’s sticking to that line [with Putin]. You have to ask yourself: ‘Why?’”
